A major flood defence scheme in Shoreham-by-Sea and Lancing has reached an important milestone, significantly reducing the flood risk for over 2,300 properties. The Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme is progressing well, with key sections completed and new construction work advancing.
Key Developments in the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme
The Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme is divided into 10 sections (reaches), and work has now started on eight of them. The latest progress includes:
- Completion of Reach E3:
- This section includes raised walls and embankments.
- Steel piling was installed along the landward side of the Downs Link path and covered with brick.
- The northern section of the Downs Link and Lower Beach Road reopened on 8 December after construction was finished.
- Updated Flood Modelling Reduces Disruptions:
- Originally, the A283 was set to be closed for 12 weeks during construction in 2018.
- However, new flood modelling showed that the planned road-raising work would benefit only a few properties.
- Instead, an alternative flood protection solution will be implemented for these properties, avoiding major roadworks.
- Progress Across Other Sections:
- Emerald Quay & Sussex Wharf: Work on the slipway and glass-pane flood defences is advancing.
- Ferry Bridge: Most of the new flood wall is complete.
- Riverbank: Vegetation clearance has been finished, with construction starting in the new year.
- Shoreham Harbour Club & Shoreham Fort: Construction work is progressing well.
- Shoreham High Street: Much of the flood protection work has been completed and opened to the public.
What the Flood Defence Scheme Means for Shoreham
When fully completed, the Shoreham Adur Tidal Walls Scheme will:
Protect over 2,300 properties, including homes and businesses.
Safeguard vital infrastructure, including roads, the railway line, and Shoreham Airport.
Reduce the risk of tidal flooding, ensuring a safer and more resilient community.
This project is part of the Environment Agency’s national effort to reduce flood risks for at least 300,000 homes by 2020/21.
Statement from the Environment Agency
